From now on I'll be posting there, making updates about the film. I'm chopping up the animatic right now, it's exciting times.

I've had fun with this blog! I may return to it if I get stuck on the film. But right now I'm trying to focus as much energy as possible on Debris. I have the attention span of a ferret, and I'm hoping the pressure of a million people reading the new production blog will keep me working on it feverishly, night and day, until it is done. (Lord knows I have the time now.)

Hard 8

Here's a little taste of my section for Hard 8 volume three, which will be premiering in January of 2009!

Right now I'm about halfway done with inking...this is the first comic I've ever done and the first real project I've worked on (other than my own short) in a style that isn't super cartoony. It's a nice change of pace, but hard as fuck to work in because I can't cheat anatomy.

"Huh, that angle's gonna be murder to draw. Maybe I could just cheat...oh wait. No. NOOOOOO!!!!"

So yeah, it's not perfect, but it's new to me. Thoughts?

ALSO, I think I may switch gears next week and try to get back into my own short for a bit, so PREPARE YOURSELF for some mad NYC bg action...but no Nicolas Cages, I promise...

Emma and Squirt again...

So many projects going on right now, and all the artwork is on my computer at home. Working full time is #1, followed by Cartoonstitute pitch board (first pass is about halfway done; I'll probably end up making a crapload of changes before I pitch it.)

Going to cut together a new Lost fanfilm this weekend. It's going to be pretty minimal animation, and I'm hoping to have it done Sunday night with a solid 2 days' work. I've recently gotten a lot of comments on the Smoke Monster film, so I'm hoping this will get a good response.

Finally, my own personal short should be back on track in October. I'm itching to get going on it again...should be a good balance to working on funny stuff during the day.

Oh yeah, and an Emma and Squirt pitch at Nickelodeon in...2 weeks?!?? (?!??!!!)

BG Color Key - Finished....maybe? Thoughts?

Coming in every morning to work on this is exhausting.
But I can't stop. It's like crack, and it's not going to let me go until it's finished and it's kicked my ass.

Still working on that nightmarish perspective background. I wanted to show the work in progress but it kind of gives away the short. So I'll show it when it's done, and then I'll give the skinny on what I'm doing. YEAH!

Also, if anyone has any suggestions/critiques with anything they see, please leave a comment and let me know! I look at this crap all the time, and everyone knows it usually takes a fresh pair of eyeballs to tell if something looks weird.

Hey, I lied! :D No designs yet, because I'm now figuring out what needs to be designed. Here's a snapshot of the exciting, exciting work I'm doing RIGHT NOW.

The party in question from the last post - my Dad - liked the short and gave it a thumbs up! So it's off to the computer to type up a detailed list of BGs, props, characters, and the 1001 angles they need to be drawn from.

As for the short itself, and what's it's about, that's SECRET right now. I will mention, however, that it is wildly different than anything I have done before. More exciting details to come...

Unemployment book-ended by full-time work is the best thing ever. I feel great. I've been doing a lot of things, namely finishing my curtains, cleaning the apartment, and finishing this massive oil painting as a pseudo-surprise housewarming present for my parents, who have just bought a condo in Hawaii and don't read this blog.

It's not quite done yet, but another session and I think it might be there. This was my first time working in oils since art school, and it was surprisingly easy.

First, THIS: An editorial about Christmas, featuring a nice little bit about a guy with a gas-can.

Let me add my two cents to the subject of people needing "money for gas"...and, I suppose, reveal my inner Scrooge.

A year and a half ago, a nice-looking man approached me in the parking lot at the Chevy Chase/Colorado Ralphs and asked for a couple of bucks to pay for gas at the station across the street. Instinctively, I blew him off, using my usual standby for the homeless: "I don't have any cash," followed by a heaping scoop of turn-and-walk-the-hell-away.

I started towards Ralphs, then thought better of it and turned. There was a station across the street--he wasn't lying--and it was daylight, crowded, and plus the guy didn't exactly look like a bum. I offered to purchase him a tank of gas with my debit card. He was very taken aback, but turned my offer down. I insisted - really, it was no trouble. No thanks, he said, just a couple more bucks and I'm home.

A month later, I was in the (vile, overcrowded, Eagle Rock) Target parking lot with Scott, and lo and behold, who should approach us but my old gas-less friend. Obviously, he didn't recognize me, because he told the same goddamn story to Scott - almost word for word, and before I could open my mouth, Scott had opened his wallet, and given him $2.

(Sorry Keeler, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I go around picking up strangers off the street and carpooling them to the nearest 76.)

I have to say that I'm not usually an avid reader of John K's blog. But he had an assignment up today that looked fun, so I gave it a go.

I managed to get one of Bosco's cycles on the Cintique (sp?)inbetween revisions. The timing is off, but I had fun animating it nonetheless. I haven't animated traditionally in quite a while.

When I quicken the timing, it looks like he's either rocking out at a punk show or on drugs. Or both.

Thanks everyone for leaving such nice comments in response to my "Emo" post.

A lot of things have been happening...mostly it's just been busy as hell.

I'm still really fucking upset about what happened, but all the nice comments and concern that came my way from friends and family and random bloggers made me smile.

I'm revamping this site soon. I may clear it out and start over...I haven't decided yet. In any case, stick around.

Europe Stuff

Here they are! These are totally out of order; just some random sketches from my Europe journal. Unfortunately, my home scanner is still broken, so I had to scan them at work. In black and white. I promise I will get some color up here as soon as I am able.

These are all a mix of watercolor pencil, pen, and marker. Some pencil mixed in there too, I think.

Until then, here you are:

Sketches from the (somewhat disappointing) Uffizi gallery in Florence.

Some paintings from the train...I wish I had a color scanner. Bah.

Some animals drawn at La Specola, a museum in Florence filled with taxidermy and wax models of cadavers. It was Scotty's favourite.

Trains in Rome aren't recommended for those with claustrophobia. Or those who enjoy having a half an inch of personal space to call their own. Can you tell how much I loved the Romans?

I have a big-ass travel journal from Europe I want to post, but that means I have to fix my scanner first. Would anyone like to see random drawings from said journal? If so, I will put them up.
