Thursday night figure drawing

Last night I took part in a figure drawing session at The Drawing Club over on San Fernando. I haven't done any figure drawing in over a year, so the first hour or so was pretty much a train wreck:

But once I got into the swing of things I got out a few drawings I was happy with. I had an easier time with thinner mediums like pencil rather than the thick charcoal thingies I had to use in school.

Overall I need to exaggerate the poses more and actually look at the model occasionally. A lot of my stuff came out feeling stiff to me.

Crazy 60s comic book shading time!!

Finally, with my lower back announcing what an idiot I was for sitting on a hard wooden bench for 3 hours, I came out with this final drawing. I think she looks Asian. Blinded by the brighness...of the DUCK.

And thus ends my productive night of figure drawing! If anyone wants to join me next Thursday, the cost is $20 and it's held in an industrial complex off of San Fernando Blvd. (All the info is on the website.) We can whine about how our backs hurt and feel really old next to all the art students! :D

Seriously, it's a fun time. Check it out, yo!

Illustration Shmooze

Some sketches from the Illustrator Shmooze event I went to last night with my friend Anand! It was pretty cool, and I actually learned quite a bit about the childrens' book illustration/publishing process. At the end they handed out "assignments" for their May critique meeting, and I may just give it a shot!

Also, head on over and check out the awesome blog of Mr. Jeaux Janovsky, whose nifty drawings make my day--especially all his recent Lost caricatures!

Nothing much new to report in the World of Anne, other than work and a lot of red legal tape waiting to start on Sparkles and Gloom. I'll keep yall updated!

Secret Break Dancing Obsession!

I was busy organizing all my Little Black Duck ("Nesting Instinct" and "Mind the Kitty") drawings tonight, and I came across these two doodles, done nearly 2 years apart from each other. I forget what's going on underneath the first one. I think Dr. Hutchinson (from Rocko) is about to beat the crap out of Fifi LaOui (Tabby's mom in MTK). I forget why. I'm mostly amused at how fucked up Punky looks :P The second one is just a sketch of Emma and Squirt from late last year.

But these two drawings made me come to the conclusion: I think I have a secret obsession with break dancing.

The other characters add an interesting element to the mix...they're both trying to get the third character out of there, with his (or her) rhythmically challenged ass intact. I guess I think nerds trying to break dance is humourous. Somewhere in my psyche I long to a hip-hoppin dance scene into my work. Maybe if they pick up more of MTK... BUST OUT THE WAXED CARDBOARD AND BOOM BOX!!
